Animate a League of Legends-inspired recall animation


The Gnomon Workshop has released Animating a Recall for Games, a guide to creating a League of Legends-inspired gameplay animation recorded by Riot Games’ Benjamin Davis.

The intermediate-level workshop provides over six hours of video training, primarily in Maya and the animBot plugin, plus Clip Studio Paint for creating planning sketches.

In the workshop, Davis reveals how professionals at AAA studios create gameplay animations, creating a League of Legends-inspired recall animation.

He begins by setting out his personal ideation methods, sketching ideas in Clip Studio Paint.

Davis then creates and refineds the animation in Maya, discussing the importance of snappy timing, strong poses, and temporary pauses, and how to achieve a stylized look efficiently.

He also reveals the tools he uses within the popular animBot plugin to speed up workflow, and shares his tips for crafting standout portfolio and demo-reel pieces.

The workshop uses commercial character rigs created by Kiel Figgins.

Benjamin Davis is a Gameplay Animator at Riot Games, working on gameplay animations for games. He previously worked at Santa Monica Studio on God of War Ragnarök.
