Chaos Group has released Phoenix FD 2.2 for 3ds Max: a free update to the fluid dynamics tool, and one of the few since version 2.0 was originally released in 2011.

New self-illumination system, morph controls and import/export formats
The list of features is actually pretty impressive for an interim update, including internal self-illumination, and an improved point shader with light cache support for rendering millions of particles.

There are also new morphing tools with new attraction forces to make simulations more art-directable; direct RGB settings to mix the colours used in simulations; and the option to loop simulation clips endlessly for review.

Foam splash and drag particles can now be exported in Krakatoa’s PRT file format; and voxel data in the Field3D and OpenVDB formats can now be imported for rendering inside Phoenix FD.

Phoenix FD 2.2 is available now for 3ds Max 9 and above, price $960.
