TD Midge Sinnaeve, developer of the Grass Generator script and other tools for 3ds Max, has released 15 free hi-res tree models in FBX format.
The models are available in two packs: one of ten ‘generic’ trees (that is, not modelled on any actual species) for quickly populating scenes; and one of five model spruce trees, shown in the render above.
Neither set of models comes with textures, but they do have material IDs and UVs already assigned, which should make texturing easier. The models were created with GrowFX, Exlevel’s tree-generation system.
Updated 30 September 2014: Midge Sinnaeve has released five new models of birch trees. This time, textures are included: a displacement map for the bark and diffuse, specular and bump maps for the leaves.
Updated 21 October 2014: The latest update adds five models of cherry trees in blossom. Again, the models are in FBX format complete with textures.
Updated 14 November 2020: Midge Sinnaeve has released five free models of fir trees in FBX and Blender format, with 2,048 x 3,072px PBR textures: diffuse, normal, specular, roughness and displacement maps.
A paid version with 9K textures is available from BlenderMarket.
Since we last updated this story, Sinnaeve has also released five free models of Japanese maple trees in FBX format, with diffuse and displacement maps.
System requirements and licence conditions
All of the free models are available under a CC0 licence in FBX format. In addition, the fir tree models are available as Blender’s native .blend files.
