Eye candy: Epic Games’ new UE4 in-camera VFX demo
Epic Games has released a new live-action film showcasing some of the new in-camera VFX tools currently in development for Unreal Engine 4.27, the next release of the game engine.
The three-minute short shows a father-and-daughter duo of explorers investigating a crashed spaceship inside a cave: environments created in UE4 and projected onto a screen behind the actors in real time.
Real-time VFX created with new features in Unreal Engine 4.27
The footage was shot on NantStudios’ LED stage in Los Angeles, with ad and music promo collective Bullitt, who created the short, getting to final pixels within four days.
The team made use of several new features from Unreal Engine 4.27, including new Level Snapshots to make it possible to match previous takes when returning to a previous set or lighting set-up.
The project also used OpenColorIO colour management and new UI-building tools to enable the team to control the UE4 elements of the shoot from tablets or laptops.
Availability
Unreal Engine 4.27 is currently available in Preview. Epic Games hasn’t announced a final release date. The production test will be made available as an Unreal Engine sample project “soon”.
