JangaFX has made texture and sprite sheet browser GTV (Game Texture Viewer) available for free. The app, which JangaFX acquired from original developer OverScore earlier this year, previously cost $20.

A fast, lightweight tool for viewing textures and sprite sheets for games
First released last year, GTV is a fast, lightweight tool for browsing sprite sheets for games, whose users included artists at Ubisoft and Eidos Montreal.

“Browsing [sprite sheets] in the Windows file browser sucks,” commented JangaFX CEO Nick Seavert in the company’s livestream announcing the free release. “With GTV, it doesn’t suck.”

View imported sprite sheets as grids of frames or animations
GTV can import TIF, TGA, JPG, PNG, BMP, PSD and EXR files, using the file names to generate a grid of thumbnails showing individual frames of the sprite sheet.

Users can then toggle between the sprite sheet and the animated sprite, choosing to display it on a transparent or coloured background, or only to display selected image channels.

As well as sprite sheets, the software can be used to view conventional textures.

Files can be dragged and dropped from GTV to popular game engines, including Unity and Unreal Engine.

Next version of the software to feature a more EmberGen-like UI
JangaFX is now working on an updated version of the software with an interface more like that of EmberGen, its real-time gaseous fluid simulator, which will be released via its own website.
