one of the entrant contacted our forum claiming that the author of katty ko was voting for himself via a 56k modem allowing him to bypass the fixed ip that could explain why such a loosy poser model had won... despite that there were really few "homemade" models...

Ya, that contest was terrible. Something smells rotten with it, the winner's model was ok at best. There were way better models on the site. Does anyone know what the prize was?

It was a farce and more!! It says on their site you can 'Make' models using that software, if I'm right in thinking, you get the model already done from he box then you just texture it and change its looks to suit your needs. So really its not as creative as it seems. Kinda weird how the winning entry came from the same software who sponsored the comp. Theres talent to be seen out there, lets hope next year is alot better and maybe has different judges, like dudes and dudettes on our forums who know how hard it is to recreate a human face is. Just my rant C

I just need to say this... I'm from Chile originally, and currently working for a big game company (EA) as a Character Modeler. I just wanted to say that even if I'm chilean I'm sad of the outcome of this contest. I've spent many years modelling characters, and Katty Ko is not a good model or fair at the most. I watched the video and the pictures. First ,the models are taken from Poser. I can see that because all of the default poser characters look dead (poor shader quality) and their faces are cold as ice. I remember that years ago I played a lot with poser so I can ptretty much tell that his character was taken from it. Which is not good, unless you spend more time in the texturing, and finishing details. It is so easy to take a model in Poser and spend half-hour making it look like katty. I think it's unfair for other modelers like us who like perfection and could start a model from a box. Us who try to make something unique, a product of our mind. I can spend a month making a character on 3Ds Maxc or Maya, at least make something acceptable for a contest like Miss Digital World. But I think it's not worth it to compete in a contest with so poor judgment. I really don't know how somebody could consider a winner a "canned" "out of the box" model, that it doesn't even look like Katty Kowalesko. If Katty wasn't taken from poser, then I must say that the rigging was very bad. The hair strands don't follow the movement of the head. There is also collapsing with the scalp of some characters. The facial animation could have been really good. I saw just basic morphing with a funny eyebrow movement. It looks cartoony. Why Flavio didn't use bones for facial expressions? The video starts with a camera approach to a haunted house. Please notice the rough camera movements, I wonder if Flavio knows the use of curves in animation. Anyway, the contest was supposed to be focused on female characters, not landscapes. He really should have stay away from animation. The first 30 seconds of the film is an introduction to the house, not the character. I'm not critizing Flavio Parra too much, he is a beginner, and he has made an effort. What really bothers me is how the people responsible for this contest could choose this piece in particular, showing really poor judgment and lack of knowledge in CG. I wonder if the site that was sponsoring it was just promoting their software package. Yes I'm a chilean, and left my country to spend my life in this field in the US. Meanwhile the contest is giving Flavio $5000 and all the chilean papers and latin magazines are praising him. I could have use those $5k to help me pay the expensive tution while I was in the US, to get the training I needed in this field. I had to start from cero here, and I was very scared. Any interviews for me, the first chilean working on CG in games? NO. I think somehow my country has forgotten me. Probably because I'm not so good at marketing myself, I communicate better by making my models and showing my art. Please don't get me wrong, I don't feel envy at all. I'm currently fullfilling the dream of making cg as my way of life, and I feel blessed. I don't want to be popular or famous, but some recognition from my home country would be nice for my soul. I sincerely hope that Flavio Parra to continue the learning curve in this field, and I know he can make it better next time. Sometimes shorcuts work for the lucky ones, it worked for him. I'm proud I took the long way, it has given me the experience I need, and I'm strong in my skills. Only I must say that I will never feel encouraged to present a piece to a contest which criteria is doubtful. Thanks for reading. Oscar Contreras
